Programme note:

‘Surcos’ is for a classical sized orchestra and is written in memoriam Peter Maxwell Davies. The title is Spanish for furrows and is derived from a poem by Antonio Machado which I discovered on a bronze plaque when walking along the walkway at the edge of Baeza in southern Spain where Machado moved after his first wife died. New beginnings? New seeds sown? ’Surcos’ lasts just over 8’.

Noviembre 1913  (Antonio Machado)

One year on. The sower casts seed into the furrows of earth.

Two slow oxen plough,

whilst ashen clouds pass overhead, overshadowing the land,

the brown, sown earth,

the grey olive groves. In the depths of the river valley,

the river flows, muddy.

Cazorla has snow, and Mágina, storms,

Aznaitín its cloth cap.

Turning to Granada,

sunny mountains, mountains of sun and stone.
